MOD Tax Refunds
Armed Forces or MOD personnel can claim tax refunds on travel expenses for temporary postings of under 24 months if you have used your own vehicle or public transport.
MOD tax refunds can be complicated so we will handle everything for you and unlike many companies, we won’t charge you a large percentage of your refund. Even if you have been paid Motor Mileage Allowance (MMA) you may still be entitled to a refund as MMA is paid at a lower rate than HMRC’s approved mileage allowance.
In order for us to process the refund you will need the following information;
- A list of the bases you have travelled to and the dates you were there – you can get copies of assignment orders from JPA. You should include any time spent on courses too.
- Monthly payslips and P60’s
- MOT certificates can be really helpful in supporting a travel expenses claim. Don’t worry if you can’t find them, we are able to check them online.
We will also ask you a few questions about your financial affairs, such as whether you have a pension, student loan or any other forms of income (maybe rental income on property) – all of this information helps us to calculate your correct rebate.
How long does it take?
The process generally takes between 8 – 10 weeks.
I live with my parents, can I claim?
If you live on base during the week and go home to another address for weekends and holidays then your home address would be classed as your main residence. This means you can claim for travel between your home address and workplace.
Do I need to keep my Assignment Orders?
Yes, these are important as they are evidence to support your military tax refund claim.
Why do you need my payslips?
Your payslip shows us whether you have received any expenses towards your travel. If you have then this will be deducted from your claim. You can download your payslips from the JPAC website.
What records do I need to keep?
To claim a tax rebate for your MOD travel expenses you will need to keep good records. One way you can do this is with our mileage tracker on our App. You can also keep a log book (ask us for details). Whilst it may be a pain keeping systematic records you will thank us when you get your refund!
Unlike many companies, we do not charge a percentage of the refund but a fixed fee of £100 each year completed.
